The International Labour Organisation recently released a report titled, ‘In the face of a pandemic: Ensuring Safety and Health at Work’.

About the Report

The ‘In the face of a pandemic: Ensuring Safety and Health at Work’ highlights the great risk posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to the health and safety of the frontline workers. The report highlights the importance of OSH (occupational health and safety) services in times of pandemics. The report has also explored ways to prevent and control the pandemic, psychosocial risks, health and safety risks to the workers.

ILO’s Key Pillars in COVID-19 Response

The ILO has organised its policies for tackling COVID-19 crisis along 4 pillars as highlighted by the report:

  • Use of active fiscal policies, accommodative monetary policy, lending and financial support to stimulate economy and employment.
  • Use of wide-extending social protection, employment retention measures and tax relief to support enterprises, jobs and incomes.
  • Strengthening OSH measures to protect workers.
  • Reliance on social dialogue for solutions.

ILO Centenary Declaration

The importance of safety and healthy working conditions for decent work was highlighted in the 2019 ILO Centenary Declaration for the Future of Work. The declaration was adopted at the 108th session of ILO to mark 100 years since the founding of ILO.
