Haryana Government postpones Panchayat Elections

On June 30, 2020, Haryana Government announced that due to COVID-19 crisis, the state government is cancelling Panchayat elections this year. The panchayat elections have been postponed to February 2021.

Panchayati Raj Act

According to the Panchayati Raj Act, the current Panchayat members of Haryana including the Sarpanch and Panches will continue to function till the announcement of upcoming Gram Panchayat elections.

Duration of Panchayat

The term of a Gram Panchayat is 5 years. It stays in power till the next fresh elections.

73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992

The act added Part IX, the Panchayats and also Schedule XI to the constitution. Under the act, the elections of Panchayati Raj institutions are to be held under the independent will of the State Governments.

State Election Commission

The State Election Commission is responsible for the direction, superintendence and control of the preparation of electoral rolls. The State Finance Commission reviews financial position of the panchayats.

Union Territories

The President can direct the provisions of the act subjected to modifications and exceptions as he specifies.
