Government revises target of opening of accounts under PMJDY

Government has revised the target for opening of accounts under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) from 7.5 crore to10 crore by 26th January, 2015.
It was announced by Finance Ministry in order to open one account bank account for each household in the country.
According to Finance Ministry

  • Till 18th November 2014, 7.64 crore bank accounts have been opened under PMJDY.
  • Out of 7.64 crore bank accounts, Public Sector Banks (PSBs) have opened 6.15 crore accounts, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) have opened 1.28 crore accounts and private sector banks have opened 0.20 crore accounts.
  • In terms of deposits, Rs. 6015 crore has been collected up to 18th November, 2014 under PMJDY. Out of 7.64 core accounts opened, 5.74 crore accounts opened are zero balance accounts.
  • Under PMJDY scheme, Madhya Pradesh has achieved more than 90% of the target of opening of accounts and is likely to achieve the target of 100% soon.

Finance Ministry, is also seeking to connect Aadhar card numbers with bank accounts which will help in directly transferring the subsidies to the bank accounts of the desired sections of the society under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme.

PM of India, Narendra Modi had launched the ambitious PMJDY which aims to achieve comprehensive financial inclusion. It provides ‘universal access to banking facilities’ starting with Basic Banking Accounts and RuPay Debit card with inbuilt accident insurance cover of Rs. 1 lakh and RuPay Kisan Card.
The slogan for the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan mission is “Mera Khata – Bhagya Vidhaata”.
