‘Gershwin Prize’ to Carole King
US President Barack Obama honored legendary US singer-songwriter Carole King (71) with Gershwin Prize for a lifetime achievement in popular music. With this achievement King has become the first woman to be awarded the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
Who is Carole King?
Carole King is an American songwriter and singer-songwriter. King and her former husband Gerry Goffin wrote more than two dozen chart hits for numerous artists during the 1960s, many of which have become standards.
She is best known for penning hit songs such as Aretha Franklin’s (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. Her album Tapestry released in 1971 made her to become the first female solo artist to sell more than 10 million copies of a single album. The four-time Grammy winner co-wrote her first number one hit in 1960 aged 17 with Will You Love Me Tomorrow, recorded by The Shirelles.
