Earth Hour 2020 observed amidst COVID-19 pandemic

Various digital initiatives were used to observe this year’s Earth Hour in light of necessity for social distancing to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is an international event used to create awareness about the need to conserve energy and also the environment. It was first observed as a symbolic lights-off event in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. It is organised every year on the last Saturday of March between 8:30PM and 9:30 PM, local time.

Earth Hour 2020

The Earth Hour 2020 fell on March 28th. It was observed on the theme of ‘Raise Your Voice for Nature’. Due to the pandemic situation, the event was taken online. People were encouraged to take part in various digital events like online challenges and contests.

World Wide Fund for Nature

The Earth Hour is organised by the WWF/ World Wide Fund for Nature. It is an international non-governmental organisation involved in wildlife conservation and environmental protection. It was established in 1961 and is headquartered in Switzerland. It is the largest conservation organisation in the world.
