Dr. M N Buch, former Bureaucrat and Architect of modern Bhopal died

Former bureaucrat Dr. Mahesh N. Buch who was widely regarded as the architect of modern Bhopal, passed away following a brain stroke in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He was 80.
He was known for his clear views in context of urban planning and environment protection for betterment of Bhopal and Madhya Pradesh.

About Dr. Mahesh N. Buch

Dr. Buch was born on October 5, 1934, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He graduated in Economics from the St. Stephen’s College of Delhi in 1954.
He had joined government service in 1957, and later in 1964, he had passed civil services examination. He was Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre and held several important portfolios as bureaucrat in the state.
Dr. Buch had voluntary retired from the government service after serving as Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Secretary in 1984. Later he had founded the NGO named National Centre for Human Settlements and Environment in Bhopal.
In 1967-68, he had served as the Parvin Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School of the Princeton University.
In 2002, he was conferred the title Doctor of Science (DSc) from the Rajiv Gandhi Technical University. He also had served as chairman of the Board of Governors ABV – Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior.
Awards and Honours

  • Padma Bhushan (2011) for his services to the nation.
  • UNEP award (1995)- for the implementation of desertification control program in 1994-95
  • Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1998).
