October 13, 2009:Right Livelihood Award or Alternate Nobel Awards: 2009
The Right Livelihood Award, established in 1980 by Jakob von Uexkull, is an award that is presented annually, usually on 9 December, to honour those “working on practical and exemplary solutions to the most urgent challenges facing the world today”.

An international jury, invited by the five regular Right Livelihood Award board members, decides the awards in such fields as environmental protection, human rights, sustainable development, health, education, and peace.The prize money is shared among the winners, usually numbering four, and is SEK2 million (US$310,000).
The 2009 Award Winners are:

  • Catherine Hamlin: Australia
  • René Ngongo Democratic : Republic of the Congo
  • David Suzuki : Canada
  • Alyn Ware : New Zealand

October 13, 2009: Nobel Prize Economics
U.S. professors Elinor Ostrom and Oliver Williamson win Nobel Prize for economics. Ostrom becomes the first woman to win the prize in its 40-year history They won the Prize for their work on economics for work on how community institutions can prevent conflict.

October 9, 2009: Sourabh Sen being conferred the Udyog Rattan Award
Known for making the promise of renewable resources a reality in India and Africa, Mr. Sourabh Sen, Co-Chairman of Astonfield Renewable Resources Ltd. has been conferred with the Udyog Rattan Award and his company Astonfield has been awarded the Excellence Award.

September 15, 2009: Late Edward Kennedy awarded annual UN refugee prize
The late Senator Edward Kennedy has been awarded the United Nations refugee agency’s annual prize for launching programmes that helped millions of people fleeing persecution to start new lives in the United States.

Amara Raja Batteries Ltd bagged BSNL’s ‘Best Telecom equipment Manufacturer’ award for its VRLA batteries.VRLA batteries today provide critical back up power for the telecom networks including remote mobile transmission stations spread across the length and breadth of India.

October 29, 2009: Bharti Airtel awarded first prize at CII’s 6th National Convention on SIX SIGMA
Bharti Airtel Limited Transport Network bagged the first prize at CII’s 6th National Convention on SIX SIGMA followed by SKF India Limited Bangalore and Whirlpool India Limited. The companies were judged on the parameters like, customer impact, results achieved, sustaibility of gains, employee involvement and commitment and linkage to strategic objectives of the business.

October 26, 2009: City neurologist gets Dhanvantari award
Mumbai-based Dhanvantari Medical Foundation awarded the prestigious Dhanvantari award to renowned neurologist Dr BS Singhal in recognition for his work in medical science. An internationally-recognised neurologist, Dr Singhal is considered as the pioneer of modern neurology in India and has immensely contributed to the development of the field in the past 48 years.

October 28, 2009: Scomi Bags Environmental Award In Kerala
Scomi Engineering Berhad has been awarded the Greentech Environment Excellence Silver Award 2009 for adopting environmental friendly measures in its engineering sector. Scomi Engineering, a subsidiary of Scomi Group, received the award at the Greentech 2009 Global Environment Conference on “Climate Change on Risk, Challenges and Solutions”

October 20, 2009: Nehru Cup Hero Subrata Paul Named Player Of The Year
The AIFF (All India Football Federation) has declared Pune FC goalkeeper Subrata Paul as the ‘Player Of The Year’ at its annual general meeting in New Delhi. Paul also recieved Rs.5,00,000 as prize money.

October 16, 2009: SCOPE Awards 2009:
PM Manmohan Singh recently conferred IndianOil Corporation chairman Sarthak Behuria and S K Roongta, head of steelmaker SAIL, the Scope Awards for contribution to the growth of public sector and its management in their respective categories.

  • Sarthak Behuria won the award in the individual category for 2006-07 on account of excellence and outstanding contribution to PSU management.
  • SK Roongta also got the award in the individual category. He also received the Gold Trophy of SCOPE Award for Excellence and Outstanding Contribution to Public Sector Management in the institutional category for 2006-07 and two MoU Excellence Awards for 2007-08, a company release said.

About the Award
The SCOPE Awards have been instituted by the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises, the apex body of public enterprises in India, to recognise the contribution of public enterprises and to encourage outstanding personalities for their exemplary work and leadership qualities. (TOI)
