Best Performing Smart Cities paired up with least performing to work as SISTER CITIES
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has paired up 20 best performing smart cities with least performing cities. They will work as “sister cities”.
The best performing cities include Tiruppur, Nagpur, Bhopal, Ranchi, Kanpur, Surat, Indore, Vellore, Vishakhapatnam, Varanasi, Vellore, Nashik, Vadodara, Pune, Kota, Davangere, Dehradun, Udaipur, Amaravati and Agra.
The programme to join a least performing city with the best performing city has been named 20-20 formula. The sister cities under the programme will sign MoUs. For instance, Ranchi has been paired with Pune, and Shimla with Dharmsala and so on.
The pairing has been done based on culture and region.

According to Census 2011, cities in India accommodate more than 31% of population of India. They contribute 63% of GDP. It is expected that their contribution towards GDP is to increase by 75% by 2030. Therefore, it is important make sustainable developments in the urban sector adopting innovative technologies.
One such most crucial part of smart city programme is city extension and city renewal. In these areas, it is essential to make sure the development is environmentally feasible.
