National Police Memorial inaugurated by PM in New Delhi on Police Commemoration Day (October 22)
- The museum capturing the history, artefacts, uniform and gear of central and state police forces is an underground facility in the premises of the national police memorial.
- A 30-feet-tall and 238-tonne heavy black granite central sculpture honouring the slain troopers, a museum and a wall of valour bearing the names of over 34,800 martyred personnel were unveiled during the event held to to mark the National Police Commemoration Day.
- National Police Commemoration Day marks martyrdom of 10 policemen killed in an ambush by Chinese troops in 1959 in Hot Spring area of Ladakh
- The day is observed to pay homage to the 10 policemen killed in an ambush by Chinese troops in 1959 in Ladakh’s Hot Spring area. Numerous other personnel who laid down their lives protecting the country’s unity and integrity are remembered on the occasion.
75th anniversary of formation of Azad Hind Government by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose celebrated
- Azad Hind government was formed by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1943
Trials of soldiers of Azad Hind Fauj was conducted by the British inside Red Fort
Modi had recently said his government will honour personalities ignored by Congress. - Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Azad Hind government formed by freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
PM announces the launch of an award named after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to honour those involved in disaster response operations
- A national award in the name of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose will be given every year to police personnel who do excellent work in rescue and relief operations during any kind of disaster.
- The announcement came on the 75th anniversary of Bose’s declaration of the formation of India’s first independent government — the Azad Hind Government on October 21, 1943.
Six-day 27th Fusion Energy Conference being organised by IAEA in Gandhinagar from October 22 to 26
- The six-day event is organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and hosted by the Department of Atomic Energy and Gandhinagar-based Institute of Plasma Research.
- The 27th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2018) aims to provide a forum for the discussion of key physics and technology issues as well as innovative concepts of direct relevance to the use of nuclear fusion as a source of energy.
Telugu film actor Vizag Prasad dies in Hyderabad at 75
- Prasad, who started his film career in the 1980s has also acted in television serials.
He is remembered for his role in ‘Nuvvu Nenu’ and ‘Idi Ma Prema Katha,’ ‘Neerajanam’ among many others.
US-based Dalit writer Sujatha Gidla wins Shakti Bhatt Prize for “Ants Among Elephants: An Untouchable Family and the Making of Modern India”
- It was chosen “Ants Among Elephants: An Untouchable Family and the Making of Modern India” from a shortlist of six “because of its urgency, its revelations and its understated but seamless match of form with content”.
- The Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize is funded by the Shakti Bhatt Foundation. It was set up in 2008 in memory of young writer Shakti. It carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.

Russia’s state atomic energy corporation Rosatom ships equipment for Kudankulam nuclear plant unit 4 to India
- Rosatom, the Russian atomic energy corporation, on Saturday said its machine building division Atomenergomash has shipped out equipment for Unit 4 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP).
Rosatom equipment includes moisture separator reheaters are designed to remove water condensed from the process stream to maximise thermal efficiency and reliability of the low-pressure turbine.

US to pull out of the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty signed with Russia in 1987
- The INF treaty was signed between the then US president Ronald Reagan and his USSR counterpart Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987 on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles.
- It prohibits the US and Russia from possessing, producing or test-flying a ground-launched cruise missile with a range of 300 to 3,400 miles. It also covers all land-based missiles, including those carrying nuclear warheads.
- US hawks have also argued that the INF treaty ties the country’s hands in its strategic rivalry with China in the Pacific, with no response to Chinese medium-range missiles that could threaten US bases, allies and shipping.
Former Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok dies at 80
- Wim Kok, a former Dutch prime minister who helped forge the country’s famed consensus-based politics and oversaw the pioneering legalisation of euthanasia and gay marriage, has died of heart failure at the age of 80.

- Asian Men’s Hockey Championship 2018, Manjeet Singh-led India beat arch-rivals Pakistan at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat.
- The stalwart Goalkeeper, who hails from Kerala, is considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and awarded as the “Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament” at the 2008 Junior Asia Cup.

- Daria Kasatkina put a set and 4-1 down to win the Kremlin Cup in Moscow denying Tunisian qualifer Ons Jabeur a first WTA title for her country.
