Indian Hispanist gets Peruvian honour
- Noted scholar and Hispanist S.P. Ganguly awarded one of Peru’s highest civilian honours – Order of Merit for Distinguished Services – for strengthening cultural links between India and the Latin American nation.
Banks asked to improve CD ratio in Bengal: RBI Governor
- Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed all public sector banks in West Bengal to take immediate measures to improve the state’s poor Credit-Deposit ratio by at least three per cent to reach 65% by March next year. The lower credit-deposit ratio in West Bengal is presently at around 62% against the national average of 74% and asked the banks to take immediate corrective measures to improve it at least up to 65% by March next. The RBI Chief held that it was primarily due to lack of big corporate investment in the state. In absence of major capital inflow from large industries, the CD ratio in the state had dipped causing some concern for the state based industries.
Sehwag creates new ODI record 219; surpasses Sachin
- The swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag created a new ODI record scoring 219 runs in the fourth ODI against the West Indies at Indore surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 200. Sehwag also became the highest individual scorer of India in both ODIs and Tests. He had scored 319 against South Africa in Test Match at Chennai in 2008.
Vedanta buys out Cairn’s India subsidiary
- British oil explorer Cairn Energy has completed with Anil Agarwal-promoted Vedanta Group the transaction for the sale of 40 percent of its stake in the India subsidiary.
UN Secretary-General pitches for freedom of Internet
- On the eve of Human Rights Day, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held that the Governments must not block access to the Internet and various forms of social media as a way to prevent criticism and public debate. On Human Rights Day, the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 is celebrated every year.
