- Punjab Governor and Chancellor of Punjabi University Patiala Shivraj V Patil inaugurated the Platinum Jubilee Session of the 72nd Indian History Congress.
Infosys to help expand afterschool mentoring in US
- The Infosys USA Foundation has expanded its challenge grant to the New York Academy of Sciences Afterschool STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Mentoring Programme to include Citizen Schools in New Jersey, US. The foundation has provided USD 380,000 in cumulative grants to give more students the opportunity to improve their science and math skills. The program’s objective is to ensure that students have an opportunity to explore science, math and technology in ways that would encourage higher achievement in classroom and in testing outcomes.
Randhir Singh named Chief Patron of Olympian Association of India
- Secretary General Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Raja Randhir Singh has been named the Chief Patron of the newly-formed Olympian Association of India while Balbir Singh (Senior) and Milkha Singh were appointed the Patrons of the association. Former Olympics Hockey gold medallist Aslam Sher Khan was unanimously elected as President alongwith Shri Gurbhachan Singh Randhawa (Athletics) as senior Vice President.
Bhutanese PM to speak in India on gross national happiness
- After successfully implementing ‘gross national happiness’, an alternative development indicator in his country, Bhutanese Prime Minister Lyonchhen Jigme Y. Thinley will be speaking on the concept in India.
Human traffickers to get death in Bangladesh
- The Bangladesh cabinet has approved a draft bill on human trafficking that would punish offenders with death.
Myanmar recognises Suu Kyi’s NLD as political party
- The Myanmar government has officially recognized Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) as a political party.
Indian firm Kayem source for U.S. execution drug “Sodium thiopental”
- Indian pharmaceutical company Kayem was supplying Sodium thiopental to US not knowing its end use. When the company learnt it was being used for execution it announced the discontinuing of selling.
- “Sodium thiopental”
is a drug used by US for the execution of prisoners on death row. The medicine is being used in large parts of the world for medicinal purposes. Domestic shortages of execution drugs have made U.S. to take supplies from abroad.
