Why air links have shrunk in recent times from the north-eastern regions of India?

Many airlines have suspended operations on various north-eastern routes thereby undermining the UDAN or the flagship regional connectivity scheme. The reasons which have been stated by the airlines include maintenance, safety and even viability especially due to an increase in prices of fuel, a fall in rupee and also a tough pricing environment.
