What are your views about the FCI plans for increasing the storage space?
The Food Corporation of India or FCI has built a new roadmap for fastening the construction of storage space in the form of silos for meeting the target of 100 lakh tonnes by 2022. Record harvests and increased procurement has made FCI sit on the reserve stock of food-grains which is almost double the level required. This has put pressure on capacity and has forced cover and plinth storage although both are not completely weather-proof. The increased production has thus created the need for suitably increased capacity. 6.74 lakh tonnes of capacity was created by the last government and work is currently underway for another 22 lakh tonnes. Another laudable initiative of FCI was to bring its labour force comprising 40,000 workers under a uniform direct payment system.
