What is El Tor?

El Tor is the name of a new kind of strain of the Cholera bacteria Vibrio Cholerae.

• It is known as V. cholera biotype eltor.

It is differentiated from the classic strain on the genetic level and known to produce the Hemolysins. It was first found in 1905 in El Tor in Egypt. In early 1900s 6 major Cholera pandemics had spread the word. The 7th outbreak was caused by this new strain in 1961 in Indonesia. It spread rapidly elsewhere.

After the 2010 Earthquake in Haiti, the Cholera has again spread recently in Haiti. The pandemic probably spread from the water of the Artibonite river, Haiti. More than 2000 people have killed in Haiti in the latest Outbreak of Cholera as per the reports published in newspapers.
