India has achieved 21221 MW capacity addition till now. The governments estimates also say that India will be able to achieve a total capacity of 62,374 MW by the end of this plan. India has surpassed the 10th plan`s addition on March 28, 2010 when paras II was commissioned at Solapur Maharastra.
The government also says that capacity addition of 12,000 MW is expected from captive power plants during the 11th plan.
In an interview with NDTV Montek Singh Ahluwalia said : "We think 62,000 is definitely lower than the target of 78,000 MW, but it is almost three time of what was actually created (21,000 MW) in the Tenth Five Year Plan (2002-07)"
It is anticipated that additional power generation capacity of 45,234 Mw can be commissioned during the remaining period of the 11th Plan. The revised mid-term appraisal (MTA) target for total capacity addition is therefore of 62,374 Mw.
The capacity addition has reached 21,232 Mw in the third year of the current 11th Five-Year Plan, or 27 per cent of its total capacity addition target of 78,700 Mw. In an Interview to Business Standard: Susheel Kumar Shinde, Power Minister says:
"India is certain to achieve 62,000 Mw by the end of the 11th Plan. Nearly 50 per cent of the projects are under construction and there are two more years for the end of the Plan. With the best possible effort, the country may add another 10,000-12,000 Mw (to the earlier figure). We have already projected a capacity addition of 100,000 Mw in the 12th Plan".
As per the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) assessment, against planned capacity addition of 78,700 MW for the 11th plan, a total capacity of 62,374 MW is likely with a high level of certainty. In addition, a capacity of 12,590 MW may materialise on best effort basis during the 11th plan. The Power Ministry has been laying special emphasis on completion of works in respect of the units falling under the latter category in view of growing requirement of electricity in all walks of life.
