P.J. Thomas has been appointed by the President of India as new Chief Vigilance Commissioner. PJ Thomas is 1973 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Kerala cadre. He was telecom secretary earlier. He succeeds Pratyush Sinha, a 1969 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre. What is CVC? On the basis of recommendations of K. Santhanam Committee on Prevention of Corruption, the Central Vigilance Commission was set up by the Government of India in February,1964. Functions: The function is to advise and guide Central Government agencies in the field of vigilance. Constitutional Status: It is not a constitutional body. The Central Vigilance Commission Act 2003 established this commission in September 2003. CVC is the "Designated Agency" to receive written complaints for disclosure on any allegation of corruption or misuse of office and recommend appropriate action.
