Consider the following statements:

  1. The speed of earth is higher at aphelion than that at perihelion
  2. Earth reaches perihelion in early January each year, and passes through aphelion around July 4

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

Answer: [B] 2 Only

The point in the orbit where the planet is closest to the Sun is called "perihelion". The point where the planet is farthest from the Sun is called "aphelion". First statement is incorrect because earth’s speed is fastest at perihelion and slowest at aphelion. Second statement is also correct because earth reaches perihelion in early January and passes through aphelion near July.
