Consider the following statements about Treaty of Pelindaba:

  1. The treaty has been recently signed between India and African Union
  2. The treaty facilitates African nations to provide uranium support to India

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

Answer: [D] Neither 1 nor 2

African Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Treaty (ANWFZT) is also called Treaty of Pelindaba. It was named after South Africa’s main Nuclear Research Centre, run by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation. It was the location where South Africa’s atomic bombs of the 1970s were developed, constructed and subsequently stored. The treaty was recently in news because it prevents Namibia as well as many other African nations from supplying uranium to India.
