The Thorium based nuclear fuel cycle possesses several well-known characteristics. Consider the following statements with this respect:
1. Thorium based nuclear cycle produces little or no plutonium
2. To get criticality, Thorium based fuel cycle does not need any fissile isotopes
3. Thorium based nuclear cycle produces no hazardous wastes
Which among the above statements is / are correct?

Answer: [B] Only 1

The natural thorium contains no fissile isotopes; fissile material, generally 233U, 235U or plutonium. Using external fissile material uranium-235, plutonium or an accelerator driven neutron source, thorium can sustain a thermal breeding cycle.  The cycle produces virtually no plutonium. The waste products contain low amount of long-lived alpha-emitters.
