Lathyrism

Lathyrus sativus is the scientific name of Khesari Dal, also known as Grass Pea.It is a cheap variety of dal with high content of protein but has been banned in our country for more than 50 years. The dal causes a neurological disorder called “lathyrism” due to most probably Oxalyldiaminopropionic acid.

The disease is as old as our history. In 400 BC Charak had associated eating “triputa” which is Lathyrus sativus with some neurological disorders. The plant is used as Cattle / animal fodder and has also caused the same disorder in goats. The problems involve paralysis of the lower limbs and stunted growth on heavy consumption. There are some sections which allege that there is no proof of the ill-effects of Khesari dal on human health. The need is to carry out extensive research to establish if the pulse variety is suitable for human consumption and taking consequent action.
