Anil Kumble named Chairman of ICC Cricket Committee

imageFormer India cricketer and captain Anil Kumble was appointed as the new head of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) cricket committee. He replaced former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd. 
About ICC Cricket Committee
it is a 16-member committee which meets twice a year to consult on playing matters and offer suggestions to the ICC on technical aspects and rules of the sport.

Boosted Board

image“Boosted Board” is the name of World’s Lightest Electric Vehicle which is being developed by a team at the Stanford University. As per the team, the skateboard could:

· Travel a distance up to 9 kilometres. 

· Reach speeds of 20 mph

· Be used by tourists, commuters and for everyday commuting.

· Be easily manually movable

Its prototype weighs around 5 kgs. It has 2 motors to drive the rear wheels, creating 2000 watts (2.6 horsepower).Regenerative braking used to recharge the battery while moving. Lithium batteries which can be recharged in 2 hours can provide for 9 km of use. The working prototypes cost USD 1,199.

Paes, Stepanek win Shanghai Masters Men's Doubles title

imageLeander Paes and Radek Stepanek defeated the Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna to win the ATP Shanghai Masters men's doubles tennis title at Shanghai, China.

Global Hunger Report 2012: India placed 65th

India was ranked at 65th position on the Global Hunger Index released by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Welthungerhilfe, and Concern Worldwide.

What was the theme of the report?

The theme of the report was “The Challenge of Hunger: Ensuring Sustainable Food Security under Land, Water, and Energy Stresses”.

As per the report:

  • There is a proportional growth in hunger decline of people worldwide but the pace of progress was terribly slow and alarming.
  • 20 countries across the world mainly from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa to be highly alarming and have highest level of hunger.
  • The nations that made absolute progress b/w 1990 Global Hunger Index to 2012 Global Hunger Index were Bangladesh, Angola, Malawi, Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Niger, and Vietnam.
  • 15 countries have managed to curtail it by 50% or more.
  • India trails behind in improving its position in Global Hunger Index chart. It was ranked 65th in the list of 79 countries in the global Hunger Index.
  • China placed at 2nd place, Pakistan at 57th and Sri Lanka at 37th position.
  • Bangladesh, India and Timor-Leste have highest prevalence of underweight children under the age group of 5 years, which records to more than 40 % in each country.
  • After Timor-Leste, India with 43.5% of its children less than 5 underweight, stands at 2nd spot in the list of the 129 countries compared for underweight child.

PH1: the newly discovered planet

imageA new planet which is called PH1 has been discovered by researchers. The planet:

  • Six times larger than the Earth
  • Located at 5,000 light years distance from the Earth
  • Present in the constellation of Cygnus
  • Its sky is illuminated by 4 stars
  • It is the seventh planet to be found orbiting binary stars, and the first to have four stars.
