BASIC countries, Brazil, South Africa, India and China expressed deep concern and reiterated their firm opposition to the inclusion of international aviation in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme. ![]()
Their other concerns were as follows:-
- Feared of similar unilateral measures being taken by developed countries in the name of Climate Change in the area of international shipping.
- Canada's decision to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol.
- An attempt by developed countries to casually set aside their legal commitments seriously question their credibility and sincerity in responding to the climate crisis.
They urged for a need for:-
- Canada to reconsider its decision.
- US to join the Kyoto Protocol to make it more inclusive.
Developed countries to honour their commitments to provide thirty billion US Dollars as fast start funding and 100 billion US Dollars per year by 2020. - Urgency of securing long-term finance for developing countries.
- They welcomed the operationalization of the Green Climate Fund and called for its early capitalisation.
